Diversity and Unity in the Body of Christ

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul teaches that the Holy Spirit gives each believer a different gift “for the common good,” so a healthy church needs many kinds of members with a diversity of gifts who walk in unity in the same Spirit. Using the image of a body, we are warned against two traps: feeling inferior and withdrawing because your gift is less visible, and feeling superior and thinking you don’t need others. God places every member where they are on purpose, and the seemingly weaker members can often be the most necessary. The greatest sign of the Holy Spirit at work in the body of Christ is how a church loves its people, celebrating the diversity of gifts that enable the church to walk in unity.
